Lifestyle Lamp

Posted by stephen creedon on May 07, 2012 0 Comments

We heard from Chris & Laurant at Lifestyle Bazaar that Archie & Blake were proving popular at their Shoreditch store and on their webite. At time of writing, our dog lamp, Archie was on the home page of the site.

What's pleased and also surprised us a little is the popularity of our Tiger Cub lamp, Blake. We had assumed that Blake would have been mainly for children and Lifestyle Bazaar is the epitome of Shoreditch elegance and electic-chic.

If you do find yourself in the Shoreditch area, make sure to pop in. Lifestyle Bazaar is around the corner from the main Shoreditch under the Railway Bridge that crosses Kingsland Road. There's an equally eclectic dickensian style coffee shop next door, The Bridge. I'd happily spend all day sipping coffee in it's heavily theatrical surroundings but my daily espresso intake is a bit too much as it is.

Archie goes to Paris

Posted by stephen creedon on April 25, 2012 0 Comments

One of the downsides of making and selling your own products is the awkwardness of rejection, especially when you've spent months working on a design. Not so long ago Myra and I spent the day marching the streets of Brighton cold calling our dog lamp Archie and our tiger cub lamp Blake around the wonderfully eclectic stores in the North and South Lanes. Neither of us are sales people or self promoters and we'd last just a few moments on Alan Sugar's Apprentice so it's always a bit uncomfortable when we show Archie or Blake to someone new for the first time.

On the other side of the coin, it's a bit of a buzz when we sell Archie somewhere new and we get great feedback from the customer. Our first Archie went Paris, Île-de-France to be exact, just a few days ago and we were really pleased to get this photograph from our first French customer.

Our new Animal Lamps for Kids collection

Posted by stephen creedon on April 23, 2012 0 Comments

The supplier of our Onion Lamp design has recently changed the 10w halogen bulb and transformer to a 110/240v mains bulb with no transformer.

The benefit of this is cost & simplicity. There's no expensive transformer to go wrong. The downsides are:

1. The lamp is less energy efficient.

2. Most importantly for us this mean it's not suitable as a children's night light. Though perfectly legal, in our opinion nothing in this day and age that's attractive to children should be powered by mains electricity.

We realise that many people looking for animal lamps will be searching for gifts for a child so we've created a new collection animal lamps for kids. Nothing in this collection carries more electrical current than a typical child's toy. View our animal lamps for kids.

A tale of customer service & an extra Onion to São Paulo in Brazil

Posted by stephen creedon on April 23, 2012 0 Comments

For the last few months we've been getting increasing website traffic from Brazil, São Paulo in particular. We have a good friend from São Paulo and he confirmed that most Brazilians still think that Britain makes things and makes them well. Our first order came mid February and, as per usual, we dispatched within a day having confirmed that Brazil uses European round two pin plugs and not the North American flat pin variety.

A week later we heard from the customer. 'Hi there, when can I expect my order ?'. We asked her to wait a few more days; our lamps are quite large (and quite hollow) customs authorities occasionally like to x-ray the package in case something more sinister has been bundled-in. We heard nothing more and assumed the package had arrived.

Five weeks later, and a little to our surprise, the customer came back to us. 'Ermmm,.. When can I expect my Onion ?'. Clearly it wasn't going to turn up.

By that time I'd already engaged our friend, Rodrigo Dias Bueno, to help us construct a Brazilian section to the website. Rod passed on our profuse apologies and we immediately dispatched a second Onion to São Paulo. Three days later we got a text from Rod, "Stopppp!!!!, the Onion arrived." We'd already sent the second Onion so It must have gone straight by Air Mail. We were happy, our customer in São Paulo had her Onion, so all was good.

Two weeks later the São Paulo customer was back in touch with Rod. "The second one just arrived".

No problem, it wasn't her fault so we asked her to just send it back and we'd refund her the postage in full. "No, I love Onion, I'll just buy this one from you too.."

This story has a second ending. Rod is helping us export British cool to Brazil. We're not quite live yet but if you can speak Portugese then you feel free to preview our Abajures de Cachorros here.

Paws and Claws from Queensland

Posted by stephen creedon on April 22, 2012 0 Comments

Our facebook page for Blake was recently 'liked' by an interesting publication from Queensland, Australia. Paws and Claws is a free, quarterly hard copy publication for pet lovers in Queensland, Australia. We've not seen a copy of the publication but their own Facebook page is quite a fun collection of pet related stories and videos from around the world. What particularly caught our eye was a story on two four-week-old male Bengal tiger cubs born at Dreamworld Australia.

Our very own Blake Tiger Cub directly supports 21stcenturytiger.org in their quest to keep tigers wild & avoid mad statistics like 'the country with the most tigers in the world is the USA' but responsible breeding of Tigers can't be bad. Take a look at their Facebook page if you have a yen for some fun pet related stories. If anyone has an old hard copy of Paws and Claws we'd love to see one.

Made in Britain and Germany

Posted by stephen creedon on March 13, 2012 0 Comments

Like many we've been sourcing some of our electrical components from China for our animal lamps but we've always wanted to make as much as possible in the UK. Not so long ago we discovered Interface2 a very hi-tech, high-quality electrical supplier based on the South Coast in Newhaven. Interface2 are designing new LED components for use in all of our lamps and are one of those new old-fashioned firms proving that you can make high quality, cost-effective goods in Britain. You only have to try.

Interface2 already make the switch cables in our lamps, once we've finalised the LED design we'll have electrical components from Britain and lamp bodies from the equally wonderful Heico in Germany, another small engineering company defying the 'smart' (not so smart) money.

Archie Lights Up Shoreditch

Posted by stephen creedon on March 10, 2012 0 Comments

If you're shopping in the Shoreditch area you can see Archie at Lifestyle Bazaar run by Laurent Nurisso and Christopher Curtis who, to quote their website, "bringing you decorative objects, home accessories & contemporary furniture from young designers & established brands". Now we're not an established brand but sadly the term 'young designers' doesn't quite fit any more...

Archie & Blake Light Up Brighton's North Lanes

Posted by stephen creedon on March 10, 2012 0 Comments

We spent Thursday visiting Brighton looking for the right kind of shops to sell our whippet lamp Archie and our tiger cub lamp Blake. And we found it. The wonderfully eclectic Edited run by Robin and Alex two great guys that love lights as much as we do. What started as a cold call turned into a happy meeting and it wasn't long before our Archie & Blake samples were being unwrapped for sale.

Edited is a great shop, they make their own lights too so if you're in Brighton be sure to pay them a visit.

Archie goes on sale at Gill Wing

Posted by stephen creedon on March 04, 2012 0 Comments

We've had quite a few people ask us if there's somewhere they can see an Archie in the flesh so we visited a few suitable shops in our local area to see if they'd be willing stock him. We were really pleased when Gill Wing said they'd stock him.
